Hotels is composer and bassist Blake Madden. Founded in New York in 2003, Hotels lives in pop’s dark corners, with post-punk roots giving way to flower petals of psych, jazz noir, electro, and surf.
With the new “Night Showers” ensemble, Madden augments the band’s traditional driving rhythms and dreamscape guitars with vibraphone, trumpet, violin, and cello to create a unique brand of movie soundtrack-esque pop. It’s something approaching the lush pop arrangements of Stereolab and Sufjan Stevens, but with a lingering darkness and hard edge that mirrors the likes of Joy Division and Cocteau Twins.
“Night Showers” was named one of 2016’s 10 Best Albums by Seattle Met Magazine.
